Planning an effective class session requires good preparation. Although this process will be as individual as you and your teaching, there are some common stages in every class that you should plan for. Use the CTLS lesson plan template to develop a clear structure for your classes.

Title

Not all lessons will have a regular title, but this element should relate to the course syllabus title for the session.

Purpose

What is the point of this lesson? How does it fit into the course? You should focus on the purpose during planning & delivery of this lesson.

Learning outcome(s)

What will students have learned by the end of this lesson? Will they be able to do something, understand a concept, talk about an issue, write an assignment...?

Bridge-in

How will you grab the learners’ attention, and provide them with some reason to be interested, some motivation to become involved?

Pre-test

Identify learners’ pre-existing knowledge. Are there things that they need to know before continuing? If so, how will you fill the gaps?

Anticipate disparity among your learners, and divise strategies to cope with this.

Input from you

The main content of the lesson. Information, ideas, concepts, procedures, examples.

Guided practice

Application of knowledge: classroom activities, problems to solve, discussions, etc.

Closure

Emphasize the key lessons, make links. How can you help students to consolidate their new & existing knowledge?

Check for understanding

What do the learners know now? What have students learned from the lesson? How will you check this, and at what point(s) in the lesson?

Assessment

How does this lesson relate to assignments, readings, further work you would like students to complete?
