About the CTLS

Our goal at the CTLS is to start conversations with faculty and graduate students about what makes great teaching and learning. Being able to build on and share these ideas through workshops, online resources, and through university-wide networks is one of the key features of what we do. Our dedicated team is available full-time to help provide resources and solutions to pedagogical and technological questions related to teaching and learning. The CTLS team possesses a broad range of expertise and experience from teaching consultations, course design and development to using innovative technologies, course evaluations and more.

The CTLS is also supported by an extensive network of colleagues and teaching fellows along with a core team of think tank advisory members including some of Concordia's award-winning teachers and leaders in the field of learning and faculty development. Our door is always open so drop by anytime to meet with us and become a member of our expert teaching community. Together we can achieve teaching excellence at Concordia.

Olivia Rovinescu, Director

As director, Olivia ensures that the services and resources for the improvement of teaching and learning offered by the Centre are in line with the needs of Concordia's academic community. Prior to becoming director of the Centre in 1999, Olivia was director of the Lacolle Centre for Educational Innovation. Her research background is in moral education and critical thinking.

Janette Barrington, Teaching Consultant

Janette has worked as Teaching Consultant at the CTLS since 2001. She helps faculty become more effective teachers. She also coordinates and teaches the graduate seminar in university teaching. Janette’s Ph.D. research was in course design and communities of practice. Her current interest is in the interdisciplinary Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).

Joanne Rankin, Office Manager

Joanne started working at Concordia University in 1990,  previously in the Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Theatre.  She now serves as Office Manager for the Centre for Teaching & Learning Services where she provides the team with administrative and communication support and ensures the effective day-to-day functioning of the office.

Joanne has a BA in Applied Human Science, majoring in Human Relations with a Minor in Theatre.  She hopes to complete her Masters in the future.

John Bentley, Program Coordinator & Instructional Developer

John's role as Program Coordinator & Instructional Developer is to oversee the production of the CTLS website, plan and communicate CTLS events and provide support to faculty with the adoption of technology in their teaching. Instructors wishing to adapt their courses to include a new focus on blended learning and eLearning frameworks can contact John for more information. He can also help with improving your use of Moodle, presentation tools, and Web 2.0.

Prior to joining Concordia, John worked in radio, web and television production and project management for the BBC and BBC Open University in the UK. His interest is in working with faculty, students and staff on innovative strategies for effectively using digital media in teaching and learning and the development of instructional content and assessment for both blended learning and e-learning.

Rosemary Reilly is Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Applied Human Sciences and the first University Teaching Fellow with the Centre for Teaching and Learning Services. Rosemary will be supporting CTLS with research into teaching and learning and helping advance the objectives of Concordia's Academic Plan 2012-2016 for innovative and outstanding learning.

Saul Carliner is Associate Professor and Director of the Educational Program in the Department of Education. As E-Learning Fellow for the CTLS Saul brings with him his extensive experience researching and developing e-learning tools and programs. As part of his role, Saul is working to share and promote the expansion of online learning tools to support student engagement and success at Concordia.
